Red Hot Arts Central Australia has been commissioned to deliver Revitalise Alice Street Art Project, as part of the Northern Territory Government’s CBD Revitalisation Program.
Revitalise Alice will see artwork applied to building facades around the CBD throughout 2020. These will be a combination of roller shutters, murals and window wraps.
The work of up to 20 local Alice Springs artists will complete the project. Mervyn Rubuntja and Melanie Gunner are the first to have completed their works, with Alison Hittmann's mural to be completed in June.
Mervyn Rubuntja, the highly respected Central and Western Arrernte/Aranda man, has three mesmerising West MacDonnell Ranges watercolour landscapes applied as window wraps at the Alice Plaza. Mervyn continues the legacy of watercolour painting, made famous by his late grandfather Albert Namatjira.
Melanie Gunner’s bright and beautiful piece depicting Central Australian flora have transformed the roller shutters at the This Is Aboriginal Art gallery in the Todd Mall. Roller shutters will be illuminated to create a safer and more enlivened CBD at night.
Since 2000, Alison Hittmann has facilitated many community arts projects in the region. She is currently creating a mural of quintessential Galahs which will be installed onto the exterior walls of The Bakery in June.
